What is an inductor
2024-08-16
  • An inductor is a passive electrical component that opposes sudden changes in current. Inductors are also known as coils or chokes. The electrical symbol for an inductor is L.

  • What is an inductor used for?

Inductors slow down current surges or spikes by temporarily storing energy in an electro-magnetic field and then releasing it back into the circuit.

In what applications are inductors used?

Inductors are primarily used in electrical power and electronic devices for these major purposes
    > Choking, blocking, attenuating, or filtering/smoothing high frequency noise in electrical circuits

    > Storing and transferring energy in power converters (dc-dc or ac-dc) Creating tuned oscillators or L

    > C (inductor / capacitor) "tank" circuits
    > Impedance matching

  • Common coil called Core Coil Choke Inductor

    1. Honeycomb coil,Rod Core Choke Fixed Inductors

If the plane of the wound coil is not parallel to the rotating surface, but intersects at a certain angle, this coil is called honeycomb coil. The number of times the wire bends back and forth after one revolution is often called the number of turns. The advantages of honeycomb winding method are small volume, small distributed capacitance and large inductance. Honeycomb coils are wound by honeycomb winding machine. The more folding points, the smaller the distributed capacitance.

    2. Ferrite core and iron powder core coil, coil cores

The inductance of the coil is related to whether there is a magnetic core or not. Inserting ferrite core into air core coil can increase inductance and improve coil quality.

    3. Copper core coil,Choke Electrocomponent Inductors

Copper core coil is widely used in ultrashort wave range. Rotating the position of copper core coil to change the inductance is more convenient and durable.

  • 4. Color coded inductance coil,Electronic Inductors

The utility model relates to a high-frequency inductive coil, which is formed by winding some enamelled wires on the magnetic core and then packaging with epoxy resin or plastic. Its working frequency is 10kHz to 200MHz, and the inductance is generally between 0.1uh and 3300uh. Color code inductor is an inductor with fixed inductance, and its inductance is marked by color ring like resistance. Its unit is uh.

    5. Choke (choke)

The coil limiting the passage of alternating current is called the choke coil, which is divided into high-frequency choke coil and low-frequency choke coil.

    6. Deflection coil,General purpose inductors

Deflection coil is the load of the output stage of TV scanning circuit. Deflection coil requirements: high deflection sensitivity, uniform magnetic field, high Q value, small volume and low price.

    Function and application of inductor

Inductors mainly play the roles of filtering, oscillation, delay and notch in the circuit, iron core coil. As well as screening signals, filtering noise, stabilizing current and suppressing electromagnetic wave interference. The most common function of inductance in circuit is to form LC filter circuit together with capacitance. The capacitor has the characteristics of "blocking DC and connecting AC", while the inductor has the function of "connecting DC and blocking AC". If the DC current with many interference signals is passed through the LC filter circuit, the AC interference signal will be consumed by the inductor into heat energy. When the relatively pure DC current passes through the inductor, the AC interference signal is also transformed into magnetic induction and thermal energy. The higher frequency is most likely to be impedance by the inductor, which can suppress the higher frequency interference signal.

The inductor has the characteristics of preventing the passage of AC and allowing the smooth passage of DC. The higher the frequency, the greater the coil impedance. Therefore, the main function of the inductor is to isolate and filter the AC signal or form a resonant circuit with capacitors and resistors.
